Welcome to the RBS Six Nations Championships, which is Europe’s top Rugby competition. It has been taking place this year since Saturday 6th February 2010 and will conclude on Saturday 20th March 2010. For rugby fans the Championship warms up the winter months often with some of the most pulsating competitive matches imaginable.
France clinched the Six Nations Grand Slam and Championship by defeating England in a very tough match by 12-10 in Paris. France had to survive intense English pressure from England throughout the 80 minutes but with the help of four penalties awarded in the first half they hung on to win.
Elsewhere Ireland failed in their bid to claim the 'Triple Crown' by losing to an excellent Scottish team who fully deserved the win in the last Six Nations match to be played at Croke Park. As expected in the other game, Wales were far too strong for a plucky Italian side, running out easy 33-10 winners, meaning that the Italians picked up yet another 'wooden spoon' to add to their collection. The competing Nations are England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, France and Italy. Ireland are the defending Champions having won the 2009 Grand Slam for the first time since 1948.
The most recent winning Nations of the Six Nations are as follows:
England, World cup finalists in 2007, last won the Six Nations in 2003; that year they were also crowned Champions of the World when they won the Rugby World Cup. Scotland last won in 1999 and look to be one of the big outsiders for the title on current form.
Italy joined the Championship in 2000 and has yet to win and as usual will be the outsiders again this year. You will be able to view the Six Nations Results on our site when the competition gets underway.
The Championship roots date back to 1883, when the four home nations played a round robin event, with the winners receiving the Triple Crown. That trophy is still played for as a tournament within the Six Nations. The Championship and the Six Nations History is a compelling read.
